02 · Why Canada
Why a firm can't send this to a US cloud
Solicitor-client privilege and your professional obligations follow the documents wherever they go. Most AI providers process in the US, where the CLOUD Act can compel disclosure, and their terms often allow retention. This API processes in British Columbia, keeps no copy, and gives your privacy officer a written addendum to file.
The rules that usually apply:
- Law Society rules on confidentiality and the use of technology apply to any tool that sees client information.
- PIPEDA and BC PIPA make the firm accountable for personal information it hands to a service provider.
- Quebec's Law 25 requires a privacy impact assessment before personal information leaves the province.
- The US CLOUD Act lets US authorities compel US companies to hand over data they hold, wherever it is stored.
What happens to what you send
- Processed in memory on hardware in Burnaby, BC, and never written to disk.
- Never used to train or improve any model, never shared.
- Kept per request: timestamp, token counts, timing. Never the text.
- Written down for your privacy officer in the Data Processing Addendum.

Questions law and accounting firms ask
Does the model see the whole file?
Only what you send in each request, and only for the seconds it takes to answer. Most firms send one document or clause at a time from a script or a document tool; nothing is kept between requests.
Can it be wrong?
Yes. It extracts and summarizes well, but it is a first pass, not a lawyer. Treat the output as a junior's draft: fast, useful, always checked. The Terms say the same.
Do we need our IT provider to set it up?
Usually a developer or IT person spends an hour connecting it to whatever you use, because it speaks the same API as OpenAI. If you don't have one, I do this as a short consulting engagement.
