02 · Why Canada
Why personal health information can't go to a US cloud
Health information has the strictest rules of any data in Canada, and several provinces restrict it from leaving the province at all. Most AI providers process in the US and may retain what they see. This API processes in British Columbia, keeps no copy, and gives your privacy officer the written addendum they'll ask for.
The rules that usually apply:
- BC's FIPPA and PIPA, Ontario's PHIPA and their provincial counterparts set conditions on where personal health information may be stored and accessed.
- PIPEDA makes a private practice accountable for personal information it hands to a service provider.
- College guidance for physicians, dentists and allied professions expects you to know where patient data goes and to have a written agreement with the vendor.
- The US CLOUD Act lets US authorities compel US companies to hand over data they hold, wherever it is stored.
What happens to what you send
- Processed in memory on hardware in Burnaby, BC, and never written to disk.
- Never used to train or improve any model, never shared.
- Kept per request: timestamp, token counts, timing. Never the text.
- Written down for your privacy officer in the Data Processing Addendum.

Questions clinics and health services ask
Is this compliant with PHIPA or FIPPA?
Compliance is a property of how your clinic uses a tool, not of the tool alone, so I don't claim it. What I can say: processing happens in BC, nothing is stored, and the Data Processing Addendum sets out exactly what is and isn't kept. Give it to your privacy officer; that's what it's for.
Does it connect to our EMR?
Not directly. Clinics use it from a small script, a form tool, or through their IT provider, sending text and getting text back. If your EMR can call a web API or export text, it can use this.
Can it make clinical decisions?
No, and the Terms say it must not be used that way. It drafts and summarizes; a clinician reads, corrects and signs everything.
